Experience
Touch the materials of Kurama, make something with your own hands, and take it home. We are preparing chopstick making from Kurama cedar, and dyeing with Kyoto madder.
Chopstick making from Kurama cedar
Shape your own chopsticks from cedar from forest thinning in Kurama. Feel the scent and the grain of the wood as you make a pair for your own table.
Dyeing with Kyoto madder
Draw colour from the roots of Kyoto madder, which grows wild in Kurama, and dye a piece of cloth. It is a chance to carry the colour of this mountain home with you.
Bookings are not open yet
The workshop is scheduled to open in the spring of 2027. We will announce the starting date, fees, duration, age range and group size for the experiences as soon as they are decided.

Coming to Kurama, walking, taking photographs and going home again - that is one good way to enjoy this place. But when you use your hands, what you see changes a little.
Why do this
So that your visit does not end when you leave.
Shape a piece of Kurama cedar and you will notice the scent of the wood. Dye cloth with Kyoto madder and you will learn what colour the plants on this mountain carry. Take home something you made yourself, and Kurama comes back to you in the middle of an ordinary day.
Not as something bought, but as something made. That is what the experiences at Kurama Kobo can offer.
Who it is for
For those who have come to Kurama and want to know this place a little better.
For those who want to take home something made with their own hands.
For those who have travelled a long way and want to spend a day here.
Where you will work
The upper floor of the traditional house is the space for the experiences, large enough for about fifteen people at a time. When the ceiling was taken away, thick local pine beams appeared. You will be working with your hands beneath them.
What you will make
Chopsticks from thinned Kurama cedar, and dyeing with Kyoto madder. Both come from what this mountain gives.
