Kurama stone, as wind chimes and vessels
There is a stone called Kurama stone. It is the stone of this place, long used for garden stones and paving.
Cutting and working the stone always leaves offcuts. They had no use and were thrown away. We have been trying to grind them to a powder and use them in wind chimes and vessels.
In the glass of the wind chimes, the colour changes with how much Kurama stone is mixed in. A little gives blue; more gives green; more again gives black. It also makes the glass harder, so the sound becomes harder too.
For the vessels, powdered Kurama stone alone was used as the glaze. It is mixed into the clay as well. The result is half stoneware, half porcelain, close to Bizen ware. We have made a tea bowl and an incense holder.
The wind chimes come in two shapes, one rounded and one tall. Each has a washi paper strip and is stamped "KURAMA 2025" for the year it was made.
Each piece differs slightly; the photographs show one example. This is an attempt to open up new possibilities for Kurama stone, made into tools you can enjoy in daily life.
The wind chimes, the tea bowl and the incense holder are ready. Sales will begin after the crowdfunding campaign.
